Merletti
Lace-shaped.
Name. Merletti means pieces of lace in Italian.
What it is
Merletti are a small dried pasta named for lace. Wikipedia lists them among the soup shapes, with edges cut like lacework. Very little else is published about them. Pastificio Marella sells a semolina pasta called merletti in 300 g packs. That product is listed as a long pasta with a cook time of 12 to 14 minutes. The two may not be the same shape.
No source gives a region or a history for merletti. The name follows a habit of Italian pasta makers: shapes take names from everyday objects, here lace trim. Use them as you would other pastina, in a clear broth or a vegetable soup. Check the pack, because a long version also exists.
